Hi everyone, Im Heather, 46 and new to the forum. Just wanted to share a bit of my life with you about my beautiful children Jack and Katie. Jack is 18 (19 in April) and although he got 3 a levels at college last year, was brave/man enough to stand up and say that he didnt want to go to university for lots of reasons, mainly that he just wanted to get "out there and start earning" and also that he wasnt ready to leave home yet.. Suits us we said (scarey when your babies grow up isnt it!) anyway, he's applied for several apprenticeships to become a design engineer, so fingers crossed.

My daughter Katie is 15 (16 in August) and is due to start college in September to study dramatic arts and film studies. She wants to be a singer (musical theatre) and goes to a drama/singing academy once a week. They put on a large production each year and this year its The Wizard of Oz. She's got an audition next week for the part of Dorothy, so here's hoping!

My husband Kev is just fab. We've been married for 22 years. He's had his difficult times and has struggled and defeated depression very recently. Its lovely to have him back to what he was (a stronger version really!) but oh my god, I had forgotten what a wind up merchant he can be!!!!

Last but not least is our bruiser of a cat, weighing in at 14lbs named Bruce after Bruce Willis. He's the neighbourhood thug but the biggest softest mummys boy indoors. Wasnt too chuffed with him this morning jumping on the bed (newly changed) very large wet paws!

Hi again Heather

I am pleased to meet you all! I am Jenni, have a very close family- I have severe disease so that effects a lot of my life but I have still done a lot with it. I got RA at 20ish. Taught for a whole 10yrs even though things didnt agree with the RA drugs.

My parents and sister live locally and we all help out. My hubby is a nurse and wks 4 days a wk. we have a cat called kipper!

I have 3 children. I adopted my older 2 came to me at 7 and 5 who are now 14 and 12. My 14 yr old son Michael is yr 10 and is going on ok, he is young for his yrs, that early trauma has very long term effects, but he is making steady progress. He has even managed a C for some of his coursework. I have been in bed today but helping him with his letter for work experience. He is going to try for a firm that hires out plant equipment- diggers and things. He is very excited!

Gems is my 12 yr old, things have not been so smooth for her and early trauma has lead to some pretty significant mental health problems. this means that she is not home currently (is with my mum and dad) but is about to move into a therapeutic community, to help her. SO a time of huge change for all of us.

Bernie is my 2 yr old, I had her by birth and she is a jubilant and lively little soul.

I have severe disease (rare Im told less than 3%of RAers get it) Things are going through a stage of rapid change here and the RA is much worse again. But, NRAS has helped me hugely- it is great as there are people on here who have mild, moderate and severe disease and we all get support.

Love

Jenni xx

Hi Heather and welcome to the forum. Jenni is very knowledgeable, she helps me tremendously, and brings me down to earth when I try to get too clever with doig stuff!! Anyway, I am Barbara, married to Roy, have 2 sons grown, and 2 daughters, one adult and one of 16 years doing AS levels, wants to be a biology teacher, was considering medicine, but the physics is getting really hard now. I was diagnosed in July with RA and am having various other tests at the moment. I work full time as a child minder to 2 babies of 22 months and 19 months. Obviously, I may not be able to do so much, but while I can I will!!! Hope you find lots of support on here.Smile

Hi Heather
A warm welcome.
I'm Claire, i'm 34 and was diagnosed in august 2008, but it appears i've had this disease since 2005!! I'm engaged to karl, who I think is just fabulousWub
like your son I decided not to go to uni straight after A levels, but did "sign up" at the age of 22. I completed my paediatric nursing degree, worked at Leeds General Infirmary for a few years then completed my Health Visiting degree (can you tell I adore childrenBigGrin ) I'm currently Health Visiting in Leeds. The RA has had a huge impact on my career, stress, flare ups, fatigue. We are currently trying for a baby, so I'm just taking oral prednisolone which is not really keeping the flares at bay!
I was interested to read about your daughter, my younger brother is an established theatre actor and has been lucky enough to have almost continuous work since he finished his acting degree seven years ago. He's just finished a run in the west end as Rodrigo in Othello with Lenny Henry (he was on radio 4 today) proud sister alert BigGrin He's now in Canterbury Tales which opened in Stoke last night. He's done some T.V stuff aswell, (coronation street, fat friends, Heartbeat) most recent was an episode of Hollyoaks last week.
I'm sure that you will find this forum invaluable. The advice, support and laughsLOL I have had from everyone is helping me come to terms with this horrible disease.
Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi Heather, welcome to the forum.

I'm Nina (41) married to David (almost 40) for a little over thirteen years. We have a son aged 5, Cameron, who started Reception last September and is thoroughly enjoying it!

I was diagnosed with RA in March, 2009, after having been poorly with flu over Christmas 2008/Jan 2009 period. I have been taking Plaquenil (had to stop this didn't agree with me), methotrexate (this isn't working for me), lansoprazole (stomach protectors) prednisolene, and paracetamol based painkillers. Am unable to take nsaids as have huge stomach problems. I have an appt with biologys nurse on 16 March to be assessed for anti tnf drugs, so fingers crossed!

Looking forward to speaking more soon.

Nina xx

PS there are a load of us on facebook - I'm Nina Sinclair.
